HeXen II: The Beginning of the End is a creation by Raven Software, published by the owner of the engine, id Software. The project for Mac OS is similar in style to Quake - a first-person shooter. This part is a continuation of the Heretic game series (or rather, the sequel to Hexen). The game was released in 1997 and distributed through Activision.
Gameplay
In terms of the gameplay, there is a similarity to the original Quake: the same style, insane in speed and danger for the player, shootouts. This resulted in the developer using a modified Quake engine.
The player in HeXen 2 is given a choice of character, which may resemble any projects from an RPG: each hero has his own set of weapons of 4 units (the first is issued from the beginning of the plot). It turns out that you can go through the storyline for the Paladin, Crusader, Assassin, Demoness and Necromancer. In other matters, during the passage for each of them, the gameplay will differ, because all the characters have their own characteristics. And by pumping each of them, the characteristics of the main character will improve (for example, the level of maximum health will increase).
Compared to 1993's Doom, the emphasis is not on gunfights, but on solving all kinds of puzzles. As you progress through the story, they will change according to the style of the locations. There are 4 of them: "Gothic Castle", "Aztec Temple", "Egypt" and "Rome". For example, in the penultimate of the listed, it is required to solve riddles, focusing on the myths lurking in Ancient Egypt. Moreover, after solving the puzzle, there will be no boring tasks: behind the wall that the player opens, there may be many monsters, due to the presence of which, the gameplay will accelerate several times.
For the most part, HeXen II: The Beginning of the End on Mac OS was warmly received by the gaming community, because it was published by id Software, which means that the project is good. This is also evidenced by positive reviews on Steam (about 250 reviews at the level of "very positive"). Most of the users who decided to Download the game noted that it has an excellent soundtrack, and you can enjoy it all through the insanely complex gameplay, which this game is famous for.
In any case, id Software did their best and made a quality product. They are still praised for the sequel to the well-known Doom, but their main success is games like Hexen 2.
