Review

STRAFE is a first-person shooter for Mac OS, made in the style of old-school shooters of the 90s - Doom, Hexen and Quake. However, roguelike elements play a key role in this kickstarter project. Levels are randomly generated from pre-prepared segments. Enemies, weapons, lives and 3D printers, making it easy to upgrade barrels, are also randomly placed on the map. This approach makes each playthrough hypothetically unique.

On the other hand, the game has no storyline and, surprisingly, no multiplayer. There is no co-op mode either. Death in STRAFE pursues everywhere, and when dying, you have to start the game from scratch every time, so the help of a partner would not be in the way.

STRAFE clearly lacks soul, there is no atmosphere here. The roguelike system hurts her. Randomly generated locations can be claustrophobic, but the realization that the designer did not make them up negates the effect of presence. The anonymity of random generation does not create the same frightening feeling and impression that you are in the darkness of someone's sick mind trying to scare you. You just walk through 90s levels.

There are absurdly few weapons in the character's arsenal. You have a choice of three main cannons to upgrade, the SMG and Railgun, as well as random buffs distributed across levels. They have limited ammunition, so they won't last long. At first glance, the idea sounds interesting - Doom also had nine weapons. In practice, the basic trio is not a lot of fun. The weapon has a secondary fire mode, but it doesn't add to the fun. Due to the lack of cheats, not all weapons can be creatively tested. Sometimes random selection is more harmful than beneficial. If you take a rocket launcher in STRAFE on Mac OS and try to make a rocket jump, it will rather turn into a mistake due to the mechanics of irrevocable death.

Not only the protagonist moves quickly, but also the monsters. Enemies run straight at you, and the most common tactic is to retreat and shoot at the approaching monsters. Whereas in the games that STRAFE wants to be like, the opponents were almost static, and mobility and initiative depended on the player, here most of the time you just retreat and hope not to get stuck in the wall. Enemies attack in the same way and, coupled with boring weapons, create a hell completely different from the underworld from Doom, which the developers wanted to revive. But, despite the above disadvantages, the game has its own characteristics and it can be recommended Download.
