The plot of The Lord of the Rings 3: The Return of the King begins where the film version of The Two Towers ends, namely with the arrival of Gandalf and Rohan in Helm's Deep. The splash screen shows how Gandalf rushes from the hill to the army of goblins, but as soon as he jumps into the crowd, the game switches from the cutscene to the game engine, and the player already needs to resist the hordes of attackers. This is exactly how the ideal effective start to an action game seems: dynamic, without delay, making it possible to immediately sow destruction and death in the ranks of the attacking monsters.

As in the original, The Return of the King for Mac OS offers a total of three storylines: Sam and Frodo's journey to Mordor, the journeys of Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas, and of course the story of Gandalf. To complete the game, you must complete all three paths, because otherwise it will be impossible to start playing on the last two levels, which is quite logical. The player is free to decide in which order each adventure is played. He can easily complete Sam and Frodo's journey first, or complete individual levels. The only limitation is that you cannot start the next level without completing the previous one. This is clearly illustrated by the tree diagram, where the levels that can be played gradually open up, which is a good solution.

The content of individual levels is very diverse, you won't be bored. For example, in the first mission, the player controls Gandalf, who came to the aid of a besieged fortress in Helm's Deep. First, you just have to wave a sword or staff around you, and use a magic shot. But then it becomes more interesting: you need to climb the stairs to the walls, descend from them on the rope and neutralize the detachment of goblins heading to the gate. To do this, you can use a giant ballista standing nearby. In the same way, you can use spears or torches placed everywhere, spray the heads of enemies with a combustible mixture or shoot from a catapult.
