The developers made a "dumb" game, without various dialogues, so the player will have to think about what the creators wanted to say. In the game world of The Witness, there are various sculptures: artists, workers, photographers, thinkers and other people. All this symbolizes something that a person playing this project might think about. Portable audio players were added to the game containing phrases of famous people: Einstein, Buddha and other great philosophers.

Studio head Jonathan Blow wanted players to enjoy solving puzzles out of their own interest, so almost no achievements were introduced. A more important reward was considered the plot, represented by audio recordings that the player finds as they explore the game location. Due to the different options for the order of listening to the recordings, a person can build and perceive history in his own way.

The development team decided to make "communication" between the player and the game itself: curious players could learn as much as possible from the game world.
