Live For Speed is a simulator in which you have to drive cars of various classes. Development was carried out by a team of 3 people called Live for Speed Team. Despite the similarity in name to Need for Speed, the projects have nothing in common.
The project on Mac OS stands out for the most important detail for that time - the realistic behavior of car models. Suspension, tires, levers and other parts can fail, which is typical for cars. It uses realistic damage mechanics, which can make driving difficult for beginners.
The demo version contains 3 road cars (rear-wheel drive, front-wheel drive and one-seater BMW), as well as 1 autodrome (paved and rallycross tracks for one direction).
Much more possibilities are provided by the license, which can be download here. The player has 4 game modes available: single race with AI, network play on servers and over a local network, training and quick races. Also, 7 race tracks with several dozen configurations and 17 new cars of different classes are being opened.
As a bonus, a console was introduced, which includes a map editor and races with many different parameters (setting cones, jumps and other objects on the map; setting rules for quick races).
There are also many parameters in the multiplayer game: penalty for speeding in pit lane, disqualification for driving in the opposite direction, mandatory pit stops, and so on. Live For Speed was also compared to Quake 3, as the games were similar in functionality.
Development history
In 2002, the first release - 0.04b took place, published on the website of one of the developers, Skaven Roberts.
After several test releases, the next year the first full-fledged version was released - S1 (Stage 1). Only 3 unlocking options were planned.
An S2 license was planned for 2004, but there was a delay in release. Therefore, 2005 gave the title "Best Racing Simulator" to the game when S2 was released.
Later, the developers dropped the names like "S", naming each update, for example, "0.6A". So there were updates, replacing the letters of the alphabet.
In 0.6F, support for Oculus Rift was added, and the game itself for Mac OS began to use DirectX 9. In the latest releases of Live For Speed, a training session editor was added, and the AI intelligence in single player games was improved.
